In the midst of a global pandemic the launch film of a mobile phone can be tricky to produce. Entirely CG with no shoot possible and in a challenging timeline we concepted, storyboarded and produced the film for the launch of the Oppo Reno 4 in China.
The Brief.
The Oppo Reno 4 features a thin and light body, a film like quality camera and a beautiful sparkly fashion back. All of these features needed to be highlighted in a way that kept the phone grounded, never floating or surreal. The animation needed to be based in real world possibilities.
The phone itself is marketed to consumers from tier 2 cities in China. Residents of these cities are considered to have more free time to enjoy leisure activities and socialising. The phone is designed to be indispensable all day from going to work to going out.
Our Approach
We created a storyboard loosely based on utilising the features of the phone throughout a whole day. Starting in a home environment the phone comes to life as the sun rises. We see the phone in a financial district and then in a high energy environment full of sparkle and speakers finishing in the dead of night in a city street.
The animation throughout the sequence is a fluid and fast paced, speed ramps and dynamic angles create smooth edits while pausing on features of the phone highlighting the slim profile and cameras without ever taking the phone from a plausible real world situation.
The Result.
The film was received well by Oppo and their consumers. In an annual evaluation of their suppliers, (based on cooperation, quality of delivery and quotation), we were given an ‘A’ rating.
